Super Moon Tracking

Tracking the Super Moon with

Like many, we were out Saturday night freezing on the lakefront to capture photographs of the moon's rise in honour of the Super Moon. On this day the moon was the closest to the earth that it has been in the last 18 years. That means it appears 13-15% bigger and as a result of this the tides are also higher.

These pictures really don't show it in all its' glory. I have the Canon XSi but my daughter used her new Canon T2i; I can not stress the difference in our photos - as soon as she posts I will put a link up. Such a huge difference - enough that I am almost sold to switch up!

One thing that helped us get the ideal location for us to capture the moon rise, was the program called The Photographer's Ephemeris (TPE). A ephemeris is a table of numbers that shows where the sun and moon will rise and set. When you use TPE (by the way its a free program for your desktop), you type in the address of your photo shoot. The program the brings up a google map of your location and shows you with a red dot your location and the angle the sun/moon is going to rise/set.

For outdoor and nature photography this is a fantastic little program; free on your desktop but also available for the iphone and recently released for the IPAD. If you visit their site you will find links to various professional photographers with samples of how the program enhanced their works.

I'm so thrilled to see these pictures. It was storming where I live so I did not get to see the moon in any of its glory.

«Louis» missed the moon that night because a rainstorm blocked the view, but he got this shot the next morning.
